Description
Ewan McMillan (February 20th 1815 – April 30, 1900) was born in Brackley Point but later moved to the West River area. Census records list him as a farmer, sea captain and master mariner in Lot 65. He was a Presbyterian who married Isabelle Mathieson. They had 4 children; John, Barbara, Ronald and Donald.
Ewan McMillan [Possible Spelling Error on Islandora, Census records have his name spelled ‘Ewen’ rather than Ewan. McMillan’s handwriting looks as if it is spelled with an E as well]: Born in Brackley Point, Lot 33, February 20th 1815. McMillan had eventually moved to Lot 65 where his postal address would, one can assume, change to either Nine Mile Creek or Long Creek, as the closest Post Offices as we can see in the 1880 Meacham's Atlas. One problem here is that in the 1876 Survey McMillan indicates his Post Office is ‘West River,’ unless a Post Office had undergone change within the five year span between 1876 and 1881 there is no geographical information in regards to West River in the 1880 Meacham's Atlas of Prince Edward Island. Also, no census information exists about McMillan prior to 1881, so the move from Lot 33 to 65 had obviously occurred sometime between these time frames. Several McMillan’s live in the Lot 33 area, one being aged 18, Ewen E. McMillan, and Ewen F McMillan in Lot 24 (Neighbouring Lot 33), aged 17. They bare the same name and same religion, Presbyterian, but no clear link is established. It is possible that they are Grandsons, worth noting as a possible lead for further information. Ewen had died sometime after the 1881 Census, which his place of residence remains unchanged (Lot 65).
