Description
Of all the protests against the injusticescreated by Prince EdwardIsland's notorious "Land Question"duringthe colonial period, none was moreradical than the Tenant League duringthe mid-1860s. Frustrated by the inability— or unwillingness — of officialdom toforce large-scale proprietors to dispose oftheir holdings to the tenantry, thousandsof Islanders embarked on an organizedcampaign of civil disobedience. Almostinevitably, passive resistance turned tobloodshed in a series of incidents thatreached their climax with farmers fromthe Hazel Grove Road in the summer andfall of 1865.
