Census takers of 1841 wrote mostfavourably of the area surroundingBedeque. British settlement of Lot26 had begun with the arrival of severalfamilies of United Empire Loyalistsin the late 1700s. By 1840, the populationwas a fairly even mix of ethnic originsand denominations, with threeestablished churches, four schools,and several mills. Bedeque itself,advantageously located on BedequeBay, was a small but bustling centre oftrade, enjoying a commercial prominencenot yet ceded to the emergingcommunity of Summerside.
