Beaconsfield was probably thelast place Henry J. Cundallwould have chosen for himself and hissisters to live. He acquired the mansionin 1882 because he felt he had noother choice. He moved there for thesame reason. With property valuesplummeting and the Island economyin a shambles, no one else, it seemed,could afford to own the Island's mostluxurious private dwelling. Cundallwas not sure he could either.
