Collection Search
Description
The Maritime History Group at
Memorial University of Newfoundland
is currently in the
midst of a five year project to
study the nineteenth century
shipping fleets in a number of
eastern Canadian ports. Utilizing
computers, the researchers are
sifting through large masses of
data to analyze more fully the
rise and fall of the shipping
industry. The analysis is based
largely upon a study of all shipping
registers of Prince Edward
Island between 1840 and 1889,
the "golden years" of the Island
fleet.
