Nowhere in North America has the automobilehad such a turbulent political history as in PrinceEdward Island. In 1908, after a virtually unanimous votein the Provincial Legislature; PEI attained the distinctionof being the only provincial or state jurisdiction to effecta total ban on automotive travel. Members of both partiesvolubly shared the prevailing opinion, that automotivetravel was but "a fad of millionaires and fools.;; In fact,the opposition could only criticize Premier F. L. Haszardand his Liberal government for not going far enough.Presumably they favoured not just prohibition but prosecutionfor the errant automobilists whose motoring abouthad stirred up so much dust in the garden province.
