Archives are very much a collaborative effort. Since opening its doors in 1964, the Public Archives and Records Office of Prince Edward Island have received thousands of donations from both Islanders and those with a connection. The result is a treasure trove of documentary heritage, and a wonderful gift for present and future generations. While all donations are appreciated, even after 49 years some still manage to surprise. Such was the case in 2011 when a nondescript photograph album was dropped off for consideration. Photographs always have an appeal; few documents are so immediately evocative of the past. What caught the eye this time was the ballpoint pen inscription on the front cover: “Cundall H.J.” We weren’t sure yet what we had, but we very much knew what we wanted it to be.
