Description
It is 21 June 1851, a soft evening
on the edge of summer.
Daylight is slowly ebbing, but
there is light enough still for the
purpose at hand. Government
Farm is deserted and silent. A
little to the east, sheltered by a
grove of hardwood trees, stands
the stately residence of the
Queen's representative on Prince
Edward Island. Close by, the
unmanned cannon of Fort Edward
Battery command the harbour
basin. Blue herons, retreating
with the tide, stalk the shallow
water near shore. A few gulls
wheel overhead, oblivious to the
human drama being played out
below.
