Over the years, the city of Charlottetownhas had many exoticvisitors, from British royalty to gangsters.Perhaps the most unusual, though, wasthe celebrated "General" Tom Thumband his troupe of performers. On 30 July1868, Tom Thumb, his wife LaviniaWarren, her sister Minnie, and "Commodore"Nutt arrived fresh from a Europeantour to perform in the Island capital'sMarket Hall.Tom Thumb was a midget, aswere the other members of his company.Midgets differ from dwarfs inthat they are perfectly proportionedbeings, "beautiful and symmetricallyformed ladies and gentlemenin miniature," as the ads forThumb's performance promised.What society considered a disability,Tom Thumb had managed to turninto a career. By the time he arrivedon Prince Edward Island, he had beenbefore the public eye for 26 years.
