Lilly Palmer Inman spent Monday,29 May 1883, working and lookingafter her three young daughters. Latethat afternoon the 28-year-old farmer'swife on the Hampton shore made thefirst entry in a black notebook that shehad decided to use as a diary:Ethel & Annie are sleeping away &Baby is on the floor crowing, it is nearlytea time. Alice Henry & the men areup in the back field putting in potatoes.We were washing this Morning &I am tired. Lucy went home lastevening. She was with me most of lastweek. Came to help me garden but itrained most of the time. Only onSaturday we put in three beds of cornbeans & peas. On Sunday we wentover home. Lucy & I walked & tookbaby in the carriage. H. had the childrenwith him in the waggon.
