Deportation is a defining event inAcadian history and has playeda profound role in shaping the Acadianidentity. The first deportation occurredin 1755 and involved 6,000 to 7,000Acadians from the shores of the Bayof Fundy in Nova Scotia and adjacentareas. This event has largely overshadowedan equally traumatic and tragicdeportation three years later in PrinceEdward Island, then known as lie St.-Jean. [Throughout the French regimethe British generally referred to theIsland as St. John's Island or occasionallyas Isle St. John's.] Though lie St.-Jeanwas a colony of France and Acadia wasa colony of Britain,* to a large degreethese two deportations affected one people.
