Description
In 1849 a company of Islanders setout on a great adventure. They calledthemselves the California Association;40 shareholders, each with an investmentof £100, each convinced thattheir fortune awaited them in the newly-discovered goldfields around SanFrancisco. Since the standard routes toCalifornia were expensive, dangerous,or both, the Association bought andprovisioned a brig named the Fanny. It seemed a solid plan. By poolingresources and sticking together, theAssociation would be able to get to thegoldfields in relative safety and comfort.
