Throughout much of the 38 years that Ile St-Jean was a Frenchcolony, its demographics were dominated by Acadian immigration.For some years the population increase was gradual, buteventually it became a flood, requiring the creation of new settlements.Two newly discovered documents show that the settlementof what is known as Prince Edward Island's EvangelineRegion was proposed in 1753 - almost 70 years before the areawas settled by Acadians who relocated from Riviere Platte,between present-day Sherbooke and Slemon Park. * These documentsprovide the earliest known detailed cartographic viewof the region and illustrate the early Acadians' preference foragriculture practiced on lowland or marshy terrain.
